The Ghana Boundary Commission, with support from GIZ/AUBP, has successfully concluded a 2-day regional orientation on the use of drones in international boundary management. Held from 19 to 20 November 2025, the programme brought together participants from Boundary Commissions across West Africa for both theoretical sessions and hands-on field exercises in drone operations. As part of the orientation, participants also toured a local drone assembly site in Accra.
Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, Brigadier General Anthony Ntem, underscored the urgent need for Boundary Commissions in the sub-region to embrace modern technology. He also noted that the orientation is the first in a series of capacity-building initiatives the Commission plans to champion to strengthen regional expertise in technology-driven boundary governance.
Dr Sanou Bakari, Head of GIZ/AUBP, highlighted that the event marked the first of its kind since the establishment of GIZ/AUBP in 2007. He conveyed the AU’s appreciation to the Commission and the Government of Ghana and reaffirmed GIZ/AUBP’s commitment to supporting future trainings.
Participants expressed strong interest in further capacity-building sessions, especially after learning about Ghana’s local drone assembly capabilities, and called for more opportunities to enhance their skills and align with emerging technological standards in boundary management.
