The Ghana Boundary Commission is a Government of Ghana entity mandated to determine, demarcate, and delimit the country’s international land, air, and maritime boundaries in accordance with accepted principles of international law. It is also responsible for the amicable settlement of boundary disputes between Ghana and her neighbouring countries. The Commission’s mandate carries broader implications for safeguarding the territorial sovereignty of the state, both within and beyond Ghana’s borders, in collaboration with various actors.

While the Commission currently operates under Act 1123 of 2024, it was previously governed by Act 795 of 2010, which was gazetted and had its gazette notification issued in March 2010. Between 2010 and 2020, only the Governing Body of the Commission was operational. The Commission’s administrative machinery was formally established in July 2020 with the appointment of its first Executive Head by the President at the time. Since then, the Commission’s primary focus has been on building a fully functional team to implement its mandate and lead efforts to resolve land, air, and maritime boundary disputes involving Ghana and her neighbours.

Following its full operationalisation, the Commission has undertaken extensive audits and surveys of Ghana’s international land boundary pillars. It has carried out comprehensive inspections of several boundary pillars along Ghana’s international land borders. In line with its objective to promote regional integration, enhance peace and security, and strengthen cross-border cooperation, the Commission has facilitated the resolution of several international land boundary disputes, constructed and rehabilitated social amenities in under-resourced border communities, and conducted joint maritime inspections with Ghana’s maritime neighbours, among other initiatives..
