The Ghana Boundary Commission, as part of a working visit to the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa-Ethiopia, held engagements with the GIZ Support Programme to the African Union Border Programme on Tuesday 5 September 2023. The National Coordinator of the Ghana Boundary Commission, Major General Emmanuel Kotia, expressed appreciation to the GIZ for supporting the activities of the Commission particularly in the areas of reaffirmation of Ghana’s international land boundaries with her neighbours since the year 2021; and the purchase of GNSS equipment for the Commission.
Discussions centred on a programme for mentoring Southern African States on how to establish Boundary Commissions. The meeting agreed that an experience sharing workshop should be hosted by the Ghana Boundary Commission in Accra in October 2023 as a first step of mentoring the States. The countries earmarked for the workshop include: Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. GIZ would fund the workshop to be held in Accra. The National Coordinator used the opportunity to share relevant information on the set-up and machinery of the Ghana Boundary Commission for the attention of the representatives of the International Boundary Unit of Ethiopia who were present at the meeting.
Present at the meeting were the Deputy Head of Programme and staff at the GIZ support Programme to the African Union Border Programme, the Head and some staff of the International Boundary Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia as well as officials of the Ghana Boundary Commission.
